Taekwondo is a martial art and form of self-defense that has evolved from the combination of many different styles that existed in Korea over the last 2,000 years. It has also blended other martial arts styles from surrounding countries. Today Taekwondo is a highly recognized global sport and one of the official games of the Olympics. Taekwondo helps to improve the health, physical fitness and poise of the people who practise it.
Tae means "to Kick" or "Smash with the feet", Kwon implies "punching with the hand or fist" and Do means "way" or "principle." Taekwondo thus, is a form of self-defense that involves the skillful use of techniques including punching, jumping kicks, blocks, dodges, parrying actions with hands and feet. However it is much more than a set of physical fighting skills. It represents a way of thinking and a set of life principles requiring strict discipline and self-management skills. It is a system of training both the mind and the body in which great emphasis is placed on the development of the trainee's moral character.
